Is the facility certified?

The facility is accredited by the The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery  Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF), which ensures the highest quality patient care in the ambulatory surgery setting.

Today, with more than 1000 accredited outpatient surgical facilities, the not-for-profit AAAASF is the largest accrediting organization of its kind in the nation.

Setting the Standard for Quality Patient Care

These days, there is more to having surgery than just selecting your surgeon. AAAASF has designed an accrediting program to help provide patients with the assurance of safety and quality in all aspects of their outpatient surgery experience. To achieve this goal, every AAAASF-accredited ambulatory surgery facility must meet stringent national standards for equipment, operating room safety, personnel and surgeon credentials. The experts at AAAASF know that maintaining safety and quality in the ambulatory surgery facility is a dynamic process, requiring constant review and revision of standards to reflect the current state-of-the-art. As the leading accrediting organization, AAAASF has developed the systems to effectively monitor and implement the latest advances in outpatient care delivery advances that directly benefit patients.

Quality

AAAASF accreditation has been recognized as the gold standard. The vast majority of ambulatory surgery facilities are not accredited, operating independently of any peer review and inspection process. A growing number of states throughout the country, however, are recognizing the need for mandatory accreditation. AAAASF is in the forefront of legislative efforts to provide patients with safety and quality assurance in the outpatient surgery setting.

In 1996, California became the first state to mandate accreditation for all outpatient facilities that administer sedation or general anesthesia. AAAASF was instrumental in the development of the California legislation (AB595), as well as subsequent laws and regulations adopted by states such as Florida, Georgia, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and Texas. AAAASF accreditation has been accepted by State Departments of Health in lieu of state licensure, and AAAASF has been approved to inspect facilities for certification by Medicare. AAAASF accreditation guidelines have been recognized as the gold standard. providing the highest level of safety and quality in ambulatory surgery care.

Many private insurance carriers recognize accreditation by AAAASF for reimbursement of covered procedures.

Safety

AAAASF-accredited facilities must meet stringent requirements. All AAAASF-accredited facilities must:

  • comply with applicable local, state, and federal regulations including fire safety, sanitation and building codes for the protection of patients and medical personnel;
  • adhere to federal laws and regulations affecting their operation such as OSHA blood-borne pathogens standards, hazardous waste standards, the Americans with Disabilities Act and HIPAA;
  • utilize advanced instruments and monitoring devices for patient safety during surgery and in the recovery period;
  • allow surgery to be performed only by qualified surgeons who have privileges to perform the same surgical procedures in an accredited hospital. Surgeons must meet the standards, such as peer-review and continuing medical education, required for operating in an accredited hospital. Surgeons must be certified (or eligible for certification) in surgical specialties recognized by the American Board of Medical Specialties. This is an important distinction between AAAASF and other organizations that may not require this high standard of qualifications for physicians operating within their accredited facilities; and
  • provide for the administration of general anesthesia, when appropriate, by a board-certified or board-eligible anesthesiologist or a certified registered nurse anesthetist. Other personnel assisting in surgery and providing care for the patient in the recovery room include specially-trained and certified surgical technicians, registered nurses, and licensed practical nurses.

    The American Association for Accreditation of Ambulatory Surgery Facilities, Inc. (AAAASF) was established in 1980. Its primary mission is to ensure the highest quality patient care in the ambulatory surgery setting.

    Today, with more than 1000 accredited outpatient surgical facilities, the not-for-profit AAAASF is the largest accrediting organization of its kind in the nation.

Do you have relationships with companies that can finance the surgery?

The Plastic Surgery Center and Dr. Kris Reddy works with 6 companies and over 30 lenders to help tailor financing to your needs. We can discuss them during your free, private consultation.

What happens during my Consultation?

During your consultation we will discuss your desired changes and expectations, review your medical history and current health, and make an assessment on whether the procedure(s) in question are right for you. This is a good time to ask specific questions about the procedure so that you are fully prepared, mentally and emotionally, for surgery. We will detail the results to be achieved, with the aid of photos and/or computer imaging. When all is said and done, you will need to sign an informed consent stating that you are fully aware and understand what is entailed by your pending operation, including the potential complications and secondary effects.

Are Breast Implants Safe?

The issue of breast implant safety has been a hot topic throughout the last few decades. As a result, more stringent standards have been emerged in order to protect patients. Current breast implant procedures primarily use silicone shell implants filled with a saline solution. Occasionally, silicone-gel filler is used; but this is highly regulated by the FDA, and generally only acceptable in reconstructive surgery procedures. Rarely, an implant will rupture or leak. With saline implants, the saline is safely absorbed into the body. The effect of silicone-gel leaking into the body is still being researched. If rupture or leaking is detected early, the implant is pretty easy to replace. Other possible complications from breast implant surgery may include blood clotting or pooling, overly sensitive breasts or loss of sensation, and capsular contracture(a hardening of the tissues surrounding the implant). Our expert team is dedicated to making your operation a smooth one. We will take every precaution necessary to reduce the possibility of complication.

Does Plastic Surgery Hurt?

You will be under anesthesia administered by an MD Anesthesiologist during your operation, so there will be no pain at that time. In the days and weeks following the operation, you should expect some discomfort, which can be treated with oral medication.

What Kind of Anesthesia Will Be Used?

The nature of the anesthesia varies with each procedure. For some, only local anesthesia or local with IV sedation is needed. This method leaves the patient awake, but insensitive to pain.

In more complex procedures, general anesthesia is needed—the patient is asleep. When we utilize general anesthesia, we use only board certified MD Anesthesiologists.

The anesthesia used in your operation will depend on the type and extent of the procedure(s), your age, and the surgeon’s preference.

Does it matter how old I am?

Due to the variety of procedures available in plastic surgery, there can be no blanket rule on age. People of all ages have taken advantage of the image-enhancement offered by plastic surgery—there are even procedures appropriate for young children! It is important to realize the limitations of plastic surgery—it cannot “fix” every situation or reverse the aging process. What is a good procedure for one person may not work so well on the next. We are committed to making your plastic surgery experience a successful one, and so we will take your age into consideration when planning your operation.

How long will it take to recover from my surgery?

Generally, post-operative instructions call for lots of rest and limited movement in order to speed up the healing process and recovery time. The length of recovery varies with each procedure, and also depends upon the individual. Bruises usually disappear within a few days, and most swelling is gone in a matter of weeks. If you follow our post-operative instructions carefully, you will be back at work and enjoying your normal activities in no time. Your scars will fade over time, but are permanent. We take care to conceal these so that they are barely visible, if at all. The image-enhancing effects of plastic surgery become more evident over time; with certain procedures it may take up to a year for your body to fully adjust and settle into it’s new look. When you come in for your consultation we can discuss your recovery period and post-operative instructions in detail.

Will insurance cover my surgery?

Insurance providers do not cover plastic surgery procedures that are only cosmetic. It generally does for reconstructive procedures…For example, insurance providers will often foot the bill for breast augmentation following masectomy; breast reduction if it is to remedy back pain caused by heavy breasts; eyelid surgery to remove sagging skin that blocks vision; nose surgery that allows the patient breathe better; and a tummy tuck to remedy the vertical separation of abdomen muscles known as diastasis, which can occur following pregnancy. Insurance providers are required by law to cover breast reconstruction surgery, and any cosmetic operations necessary to achieve symmetry in either breast. In the event your surgery is covered, pre-certification is required. We are happy to assist you with the process.

Do you recommend a Medical Clearance?

In preparing you for your surgery, your safety is of the utmost importance. As per established standards, preoperative evaluation by your primary care physician or internist is important depending your age and health.

The evaluation usually includes a blood test and an EKG as well as a letter stating the patient is cleared for anesthesia and surgery.

If you do not have a primary care physician, I recommend respected internist Dr. Raj Khambathi for preoperative evaluation and medical clearance. His office is near our center and, as such, is very convenient for our patients. To arrange an appointment with Dr. Khambathi, you may call his office at (561) 642-0307.
