Dr. Kris Reddy FACS: Expert of Ear Surgery in West Palm Beach
It's difficult to have protruding ears. Even if they are only slightly large, misshapen or asymmetrical, children and adults alike often endure years of bullying. The good news is that otoplasty, or ear surgery, is a relatively easy procedure that can be performed at any time after the ears have reached full size, usually by five years of age.
Dr. Kris Reddy FACS, board certified plastic surgeon and West Palm Beach Otoplasty expert, performs ear surgery to set prominent ears back closer to the head or to reduce the size of large ears. Otoplasty is also commonly referred to as "ear pinning," "ear pinning surgery," "ear pinned," "ear reshaping surgery," "ear tuck surgery," "ear correction," and "earlobe reconstruction surgery." Many Otoplasty patients in South Florida choose ear surgery to greatly enhance their appearance and self-esteem.Dr. Kris Reddy FACS, West Palm Beach board certified plastic surgeon, is an expert of ear surgery in West Palm Beach. Dr. Reddy has the rare double honor of being a Fellow of American and International College of Surgeons, the only board certified plastic surgeon in Palm Beach County, Florida to hold both of these prestigious honors. Dr. Reddy is also a member of the American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery.
The Basics – Ear Surgery in West Palm Beach
Dr. Kris Reddy FACS, Board Certified plastic surgeon and West Palm Beach Otoplasty expert, performs ear surgery at the West Palm Beach Plastic Surgery Center, his AAAASF nationally accredited facility, generally utilizing MD Anesthesiologists to provide iv sedation or general anesthesia.
For the most part, the operation is done on children between the ages of four and 14. Ear surgery on adults is also possible, and there are generally no additional risks associated with ear surgery on an older patient.
Dr. Reddy advises that it's typically better to do as soon as possible after the physical maturation (generally by the age of five). Physically, it's better because the cartilage is pliable and easy to shape. Emotionally, it's better because it protects your child from prolonged name calling that can affect self esteem. Adults achieve wonderful results from otoplasty, too, and often decide to have the surgery because they want the confidence to wear their hair short or throw away the baseball caps once and for all.
Dr. Reddy typically performs ear surgery in one to two hours. Dr. Reddy places an incision just behind the ear and above the natural fold where the ear joins the head. Dr. Reddy makes the incision for the otoplasty in this spot to reshape the cartilage and skin to achieve your desired results. In rare cases, Dr. Reddy will actually have to remove a small amount of cartilage. Then, Dr. Reddy will anchor the ear with stitches to hold it in place while it heals. Because the incision is made behind the ear, scarring is practically invisible.
Following surgery, Dr. Reddy will apply soft dressings to the ears to absorb the drainage. A patient may experience some swelling and bruising. Dr. Reddy will remove the dressings 4-7 days after the ear surgery, but it will be necessary for a patient to wear a wide head band over his/her ears at night for up to 4 weeks to prevent them from pulling forward when he/she turns over during sleep. The patient may experience some moderate discomfort, which is easily managed with pain medication which is prescribed with the age and health of the patient in mind.
The patient will be able to resume light activities within a week. Dr. Reddy will advise on the level and type of activities allowed based on the specifics of the case.
This case is one of the most rewarding for the patient and Dr. Reddy as Dr. Reddy can see the growth in self confidence during each postoperative visit.
