A facelift is rejuvenation surgery that goes beyond just tightening skin. A modern facelift usually extends below the skin to address the superficial musculoaponeurotic system(SMAS) by repositioning underlying facial muscles as well as reducing excess skin. The modern facelift has moved away from using skin tension to contour the face. The most important aspect of a facelift is to improve facial shape while limiting signs that a surgical procedure has been performed. The final surgical component of a facelift addresses the neck. Proper manipulation of the vertical bands in the neck provides a smoothing look to the face that allows a natural looking restoration of youthful beauty. Benefits: *More complete and thorough surgery allowing for the optimal return of a younger look. *Results can generally be seen for up to ten years. Risks: *General anesthesia can complicate and lengthen the healing process leading to greater downtime. There have been several well publicized but poor quality techiques including: * Limited and Minimal Incision Facelift Procedures (including Lifestyle Lift) which only treat the limited areas that require rejuvenation. However, these techniques does not allow for SMAS correction, generally does not include the neck, and produce results that often are not noticeable and tend to last only a few to five years. * Mini-Lift or Suspension Lifts (aka featherlift, lunchtime lift, suspension lift, barbed sutures, and Aptos) where an incision is placed in the hairline. A suture is inserted through the tube then reversed back to the original incision of the hairline. The suture left behind is intended to suspend the skin giving the appearance of a lift and the smoothing of facial creases and folds. These techniques produce skin that is too loose and may pucker, possibly creates asymmetry and other irregularities, have sutures that are too tight and may restrict natural facial movement and expression, may have sutures that may become visible on the skins surface, have resulting scar tissue that may produce visible irregularities in the skin if and when the threads are removed, and lasts only a few years. * Thermage heats the lower layers of skin with radio waves while outer layers are protected by cooling spray. The procedure is intended to increase overall tighening by more collagen. However, these procedures works on some people but not on others. Genetic differences and lifestyle factors may play a role. Even when it works, improvement is only up to 2 years and improvement is only 2 or 3 mm. Thermage is not cost effective due to the initial cost and short duration. While not a replacement for the modern facelift for effectiveness, Dr. Reddy offers a facelift variation which utilizes traditional facelift techniques but can be performed under local anesthesia in a less invasive fashion to provide natural looking and personalized results in a cost-effective manner. Unlike most facelift variations, it provides SMAS correction by undermining and smoothing the neck which allows for natural looking and more comprehensive results than non-traditional Facelift techniques. The expected duration is almost as long as modern Facelift and can provide easier healing due to the fact that the procedure can be performed under local anesthesia. The SmartLift procedure can be cost effective when the comprehensive nature of the procedure and the expected duration of the results is compared to the fees associated with non-traditional Facelift techniques. The flexible nature of the SmartLift procedure allows personalization to address the individual needs of a procedure. The best candidate for the SmartLift are patients who have had a modern facelift and needs a refresher.
