The Basics – Keloid Care in West Palm Beach
Dr. Kris Reddy, West Palm Beach Board Certified plastic surgeon, treats keloids at the West Palm Beach Plastic Surgery Center, his AAAASF nationally accredited facility, generally using a local anesthetic or numbing cream rather than utilizing the services of an anesthesiologist.
A keloid is a type of scar which results in an overgrowth of tissue at the site of a healed skin injury. Keloids are firm, rubbery lesions or shiny, fibrous nodules, and can vary from pink to flesh-colored or red to dark brown in color. A keloid scar is benign, non-contagious, and usually accompanied by severe itchiness, sharp pains, and changes in texture. In severe cases, it can affect movement of skin. Keloids should not be confused with hypertrophic scars, which are raised scars that do not grow beyond the boundaries of the original wound and may reduce over time.
Keloids are difficult to treat. Steroid treatments such as kenalog injections are generally the first step. Kenalog injections require numerous treatments. Even though you may risk hyperpigmentation on darker skin, this is still the more conventional and cautious step. Kenalog injections decrease the collagen response and help improve the chances of keloids from returning. Steroid treatments may also decrease the size of the keloid and prepare the area for excision. Excision is possible for larger keloids, but generally not effective if used in isolation.
