CoolSculpting West Palm Beach : Frequently Asked Questions
1) What is Cryolipolysis?
Cryolipolysis® is the non-invasive cooling of adipose tissue to induce lipolysis (breaking down fat cells) without damage to other tissues. The result over two to four months is a noticeable, natural-looking reduction in fat.
2) How does Cryolipolysis work?
Cryolipolysis® is based on the principle that fat cells are more vulnerable to energy extraction (cooling) than surrounding tissues.(1) A non-invasive applicator is attached to the targeted procedure area to extract energy from the underlying fat tissue, while protecting the skin, nerves, muscles and other tissue. The cooled fat cells undergo apoptosis (controlled cell death) and are gradually eliminated, reducing the thickness of the fat layer.
3) What happens to the fat cells?
During the procedure, exposure to cooling causes fat cell apoptosis, which leads to the release of cytokines and other inflammatory mediators. Inflammatory cells gradually digest the affected fat cells in the months after the procedure. Lipids from the fat cells are slowly released and transported by the lymphatic system to be processed, much like fat from food. Because the lipid clearance process is gradual there is no harmful change in blood lipids or liver function.
4) At what temperature does Coolsculpting Work?
CoolSculpting is performed at -11 degrees celsius. Therefore, all your other cells are perfectly safe from damage during CoolSculpting. Lipids in fat cells crystallize at warmer temperatures than other water-containing cells. This is how Cryolipolysis® targets only fat cells for destruction and spares other tissue such as skin, muscle, and nerves. The CoolSculpting system controls the rate of energy extraction or cooling during the procedure.
5) What is the CoolSculpting Procedure?
The CoolSculpting procedure is a new non-invasive method clinically proven to reduce fat. CoolSculpting is clinically proven to reduce the fat layer. Fat is uniquely susceptible to cold while sparing all other tissue. The mechanism of action is Cryolipolysis that is an effective process for nonsurgical fat reduction.
CoolSculpting is an innovative way to contour your body by freezing unwanted fat away without surgery or downtime. It works by gently cooling unwanted fat cells in the body to induce a natural, controlled elimination of fat cells without harming the surrounding tissue.
6) How is Cooling Delivered to the Fat Layer?
The CoolSculpting system includes a selection of non-invasive, tissue-cooling applicators controlled by a precisely engineered monitoring system. To perform the CoolSculpting procedure, Dr. Reddy and his staff attach an applicator to the targeted procedure area to extract energy (cooling) from the underlying fat tissue. The specially designed vacuum applicator draws tissue into the applicator cup and gently holds it between two cooling panels, extracting heat according to the selected procedure profile. Sensors embedded in the applicator monitor the skin during the procedure to ensure a consistent and uniform procedure. The sensors are linked to the control console to continuously monitor and adjust cooling throughout the CoolSculpting procedure and provide continuous feedback to Dr. Reddy and the staff. A paging system automatically alerts the physician of any device or patient issues that need attention and notifies him or her when the CoolSculpting procedure is complete.
7) What are the Results?
Clinical studies demonstrate that the CoolSculpting procedure provides noticeable, measurable fat reduction in properly selected patients over the course of two to four months after the procedure. Additional coolsculpting may be performed one to four months after the initial procedure to achieve greater fat reduction. Patience is key for this procedure. You will not see immediate and drastic changes that you will with traditional liposuction, However, clinical studies suggest that you will generally see between 10% - 30% improvement 12 weeks after treatment. Some patients will respond in the first month and some patients will be slow responders and will need up to 6 months to achieve the results.
8) How Long do the Results Last?
Patients experiencing fat layer reduction show persistent results at least six months after the CoolSculpting treatment. Longer-term studies have not yet been completed. It is known that the exposure to cooling causes the fat cells to begin a process of natural removal, which gradually reduces the thickness of the fat layer. The fat cells in the treated area are gently eliminated through the body's normal metabolism process, like fat from food. The treated fat cells, once eliminated by coolsculpting from the body, are gone for good.
9) How do the Results Compare to Traditional Liposuction?
The results of the CoolSculpting procedure are not as rapid or dramatic as invasive procedures such as liposuction. For most patients with a BMI of 18 or more, you may want to consider liposuction.
10) What are the Common Effects After the Procedure?
The CoolSculpting procedure is completely non-invasive, which allows immediate return to normal activities such as work or exercise. Redness may appear in the treated area, and may last from a few minutes to a few hours. Some localized bruising or swelling may occur, which clears within a few weeks. Many patients experience a temporary dulling of sensation in the treated area, lasting one to eight weeks.
11) Which Patients are the Best Candidates?
Ideal candidates for the CoolSculpting procedure are relatively fit, but have some modest-size fat bulges that are not easily reduced through diet and exercise. They are seeking spot reduction for specific areas of fat, but are not considering a surgical procedure. The CoolSculpting procedure is not intended for weight loss or obesity, and it is not a substitute for invasive methods such as liposuction.
12) How long after giving birth can a mother have the procedure?
If the mother is not breast feeding, then she can generally have the procedure 6 months after giving birth.
13) Can men with gynecomastia benefit from Coolsculpting?
Yes, men with gynecomastia are excellent candidates for Coolsculpting.
14) Will patient with bra fat benefit?
Yes, patients with bra fat can benefit.
15) I have had liposuction, but I want some more fat reduction. Is coolsculpting possible?
Yes, patients who have recovered from their liposuction, can have coolsculpting?
16) What is the latest advance with Coolsculpting?
Coolsculpting which had previously received FDA approval for the abdomen, love handles, thighs and double chin, has been approved by the FDA in 2016 to reduce fat around the bra straps, on the back and underneath the buttocks. Over the last year, Coolsculpting has been approved for use in the arms. Zeltiq continues to decrease the treatment times.
17) Is it safe?
Coolsculpting is FDA-cleared, proven safe and clinically effective. Millions of procedures have been performed in more than 70 countries around the world. There’s minimal risk due to its noninvasive nature. But, as with any medical procedure, Dr. Reddy will review with you if it is an appropriate procedure for you.
18) From a BMI perspective, what patients are appropriate for Coolsculpting?
Patients who have a BMI of 30 or less and maintain a healthy lifestyle following a treatment can consider Coolsculpting. Patients with a BMI of 20 or more may be better candidates for liposuction. Patients who are significantly overweight are less likely to appreciate a significant improvement with a single treatment.
19) What level of fat does Coolsculpting Treat?
Coolsculpting treats the subcutaneous fat (which is the stubborn fat immediately below the skin). For optimal appearance, a patient must maintain proper diet and exercise in order to limit the visceral fat.
20) How long does it take?
The length of your Coolsculpting treatment will vary depending on the number of areas being treated during one visit. While each treatment lasts about one hour, some patients have more than one treatment during the same office visit.
21) What does it feel like?
As the cooling begins during the first few minutes of the Coolsculpting treatment, you may typically feel intense cold. This soon dissipates. With some applicators, you’ll feel some pulling as suction is applied. The area generally goes numb within five to 10 minutes during treatment. Many people read, watch videos, work on their laptop or even take a nap during their Coolsculpting treatment.
22) What are the most popular places on your body to a Coolsculpting treatment done?
CoolSculpting is FDA-cleared to be used on some of the most common problem areas: the abdomen, love handles, bra fat, back fat, inner and outer thighs, the double chin, and underneath the buttocks (also known as the banana roll).
23) Do you have a guarantee for the results?
According to Zeltiq (the manufacturer of Coolsculpting), we have an unique promise for satisfaction. In the event that a patient of Dr. Reddy's wishes to switch from Coolsculpting to Liposuction, 50% of the amount spent on Coolsculpting will be credited towards the cost of Liposuction if the liposuction is to be performed in the same area as the Coolsculpting treatment.
24) What are the options other than coolsculpting to remove fat?
There are 5 main ways to destroy fat cells: liposuction, ultrasound(liposonix and ultrashape), heat(body fx, sculpsure, laser liposuction etc.), cryolipolysis (coolsculpting), and mesotherapy (kybella). Now, only the methods involving heat do anything to shrink the skin, however the resulting skin tightening is nominal (much less than a plastic surgery patient would expect or accept). I find the heat methods of destroying fat the least effective, painful and they focus on superficial fat, leaving more irregularities. Liposuction and coolsculpting are my preferred methods for destroying fat cells in the body (with the exception of the double chin where liposuction, coolsculpting and kybella are viable options). These methods work but if you have a skin laxity issue it will not address it. To address, significant degree of skin laxity; surgery is the only solution.
25) Why does Dr. Reddy prefer Coolsculpting to Sculpsure and other heat based fat reduction treatments?
- The technology has been around for years, providing proven, effective results.
- Can be used for harder to reach areas like the neck, chin, arm fat, back rolls, inner thighs, and bra line.
- Some providers offer DualSculpting, using two CoolSculpting machines simultaneously to speed up the treatment.
- No downtime.
- Treated areas will feel tender for a few days post treatment. Can cause bruising and swelling.
- No direct sun exposure allowed for a week before and after the treatment, as it might cause sunburn.
- Must generally wait 6 weeks or more before getting a second treatment.
- Some patients report the development of bumps and nodules on the skin. These can be massaged and will go away on their own.
- Results take a little longer to start showing than other non-invasive treatments.
