Dr. Kris Reddy FACS can perform a number of procedures under local including facelift (Mini Lift), liposuction, eyelids surgery (blepharoplasty) , and skin excision (Tummy Tuck).
A Face Lift Under Local Anesthesia and/or Neck Lift under local anesthesia with Dr. Kris Reddy FACS is a surgical procedure that provides patients with a rejuvenated, refreshed and natural look without an “operated look’ .
Face Lift and Neck Lift Under Local Anesthesia by Dr. Reddy is performed with minimal discomfort and no pain while the patient remains awake. This awake Face Lift and Neck Lift under local anesthesia avoids the risks associated with general anesthesia (going to sleep), IV sedation (twilight anesthesia) and/or heavy oral sedation.
During the procedure, Dr. Reddy, West Palm Beach Board Certified Cosmetic Plastic Surgeon, injects the numbing solution (diluted local anesthesia) in your face and neck area with minimal discomfort or pain. Once all the face and neck is numbed, Dr. Reddy performs your Face Lift and Neck Lift without discomfort or pain. Since you are not sedated or placed asleep, you are able to breathe on your own (no need for a breathing tube or anesthesia machine). Additionally, by remaining awake, your body maintains your normal blood pressure stable through the procedure (general anesthesia agents usually lower your blood pressure). You and Dr. Reddy will be able to have a conversation during the procedure, making the experience a memorable one. Once the procedure is finished, light bandages / dressings are placed and then you are allowed to go home shortly thereafter.
Local vs. General Anesthesia
Tumescent liposuction remains the gold standard for liposuction techniques, and may be performed under local anesthesia rather than general. While general anesthesia allows for larger amounts of fat to be removed at once, many patients prefer slower, more incremental fat removal under local anesthesia to the risks associated with general anesthesia.
The Benefits of Local Anesthesia
During liposuction with local anesthesia, the patient is more responsive to repositioning or even standing up to check for the symmetry during surgery. Local anesthesia also allows patients to recover more quickly, since they don’t need time in a recovery room waiting for the effects of general anesthesia to wear off. An easy recovery is especially helpful for patients who want to resume an exercise routine as quickly as possible in order to maintain their liposuction results.
The Downsides of Local Anesthesia
Local anesthesia definitely is not the right choice for everyone. For starters, it is often more uncomfortable for liposuction patients than general anesthesia, since a doctor must be very careful not to over-inject lidocaine. Given this, there is no way for Dr. Reddy (or any surgeon) can to treat large-sized areas with local anesthesia alone. This means that “touch up” treatments and small to mid sized areas may be appropriate with utilizing local anesthesia.
Eyelid Surgery (Blepharoplasty) under local
Eyelid surgery (blepharoplasty) is one of the most common cosmetic surgery procedures performed via local anesthesia. The only discomfort patient have described during upper eyelid surgery is the initial numbing medication. The numbing medication works quickly and provides comfort during the entire procedure.
Preparation for eyelid surgery
Unlike procedures that require traditional anesthesia, patients do not need to fast for several hours. A light breakfast or snack is allowed before the procedure.
Eyelid surgery procedure
Regardless of the type of upper eyelid surgery performed to rejuvenate the eyes, patients are comfortable during the procedure while soft music plays in the background. Patients may be periodically asked by Dr. Reddy to open and close their eyes. Some patients have even fallen asleep since they were so comfortable, while many like to speak with Dr. Reddy during the procedure. Surgery takes about 1 hour to a couple of hours, then ice soaks are placed to help reduce swelling and bruising.
Recovery after eyelid surgery
Patient are observed for short period of time before going home. Since local anesthesia doesn’t require any of the typical anesthetic medications, patients experience neither nausea nor grogginess after eyelid surgery.
Who is not a candidate for upper eyelid surgery via local anesthesia?
Most patients can have blepharoplasty with just local anesthesia. However, some eyelid surgery patients would benefit from sedation or general anesthesia, such as those:
- Experiencing severe anxiety; or
- Requiring additional cosmetic procedures – ex. facelift with eyelid surgery; or
- Those with medical conditions that require deeper anesthesia.
The decision regarding anesthesia is one made by both the patient and Dr. Reddy.
Tummy Tuck (Skin Excision) under Local
Whether an adverse scar from prior C-section or lower tummy “pouch” (below the belly button) of fat and skin, a mini tummy tuck procedure can be safely performed in the office with local anesthesia (numbing solution injections) only.
This procedure involves removing skin and tightening lower abdominal muscle below the belly button, usually through a smaller incision than a full tummy tuck.
Often, a mini liposuction procedure can be performed to further sculpt the lower abdominal area.
